Vajpayee was born on 25 December 1924 in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. He joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu nationalist organization, at the age of 16 and became a full-time worker in 1947. He was one of the founding members of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS), the precursor of the BJP, in 1951. He was elected to parliament for the first time in 1957 from Balrampur constituency in Uttar Pradesh. He rose to prominence as a leader of the opposition and a powerful orator who could sway the masses with his eloquence.
Vajpayee became the prime minister of India for the first time in 1996, but his government lasted only 13 days as he failed to secure a majority. He returned to power in 1998, heading a coalition of 13 parties called the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). He faced many challenges during his tenure, such as the nuclear tests in Pokhran, the Kargil War with Pakistan, the hijacking of Indian Airlines flight IC-814, and the Gujarat riots. He also initiated several bold initiatives, such as the Lahore bus service, the Agra summit, and the peace process with Pakistan. He also launched many development schemes, such as the Golden Quadrilateral highway project, the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), and the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA).
Vajpayee won a historic mandate in 1999, becoming the first prime minister since Indira Gandhi to win two consecutive terms. He continued to lead the country with vision and wisdom until 2004, when he lost the general elections to the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA). He retired from active politics in 2005 due to ill health and passed away on 16 August 2018 at the age of 93.
Vajpayee was not only a great leader but also a great poet. He wrote several poems in Hindi, some of which were translated into English and other languages. His poems reflected his love for India, his patriotism, his optimism, and his humanism. Some of his famous poems are "Kadam Milakar Chalna Hoga", "Geet Naya Gata Hoon", "Atalji Ka Dhwaj", and "Aao Phir Se Diya Jalayein".
Vajpayee was honored with many awards and recognitions, both nationally and internationally. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor, in 2015. He was also conferred the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian honor, in 1992. He received several honorary doctorates from various universities around the world. He was also nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005.
Vajpayee was a man who made Hindu nationalist politics acceptable to a diverse and secular India. He was a man who bridged the gap between tradition and modernity. He was a man who inspired millions of Indians with his charisma and courage. He was a man who left an indelible mark on India's history and destiny.
